Child Centered Disney

Planning a Disney Vacation can be fun and exciting but also very stressful. There are so many questions to answer, especially for first timers. Where do you stay? What do you pack? How do you plan your days? How will the kids do waiting in such long lines in the heat? How do you deal with meltdowns in the park!?!?

My goal for this blog is to give tips for families (or young at heart adults like myself) planning Disney vacations to help make them as low stress (and FUN) as possible. To do so, I’ll be combining my knowledge of child development with my interest (ok, obsession) with all things Disney to provide ways families can involve and engage their children every step of the way.

Aside from tips on making your vacation child-centered or stress/worry free, I will be blogging about some topics just for fun! I love the EPCOT Food and Wine Festival, trying different restaurants or food items, and using my creativity to make Disney crafts or plan Disney surprises. I am a firm believer that guests of all ages can enjoy a Disney Destination with or with or kids and so (while not necessarily child-centered) some of my posts will focus on adults only trips or aspects of a Disney vacation that would be appealing to adults with or without children.

I also like to blog a bit about my work as a Child Life Specialist, how I use my love of Disney at work everyday, and things I learn from the patients and families I work with that may inspire or benefit my readers.

My husband (Dave), my brother (Jason) and I love sharing our advice with you. We have new videos every Friday (with a few bonus posts in between) that include vlogs of our trips, reviews of hotels and restaurants we visit, and trips for the general population traveling to Walt Disney World.

Who am I, do you ask?

My name is Melissa. I’m a former Fairy Godmother in Training at the Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique (on the Disney College Program), Make-A-Wish Wish Granting Volunteer, and all around Disney lover. I currently live in West Hartford, CT with my husband Dave. I love trying new restaurants, volunteering for various organizations, doing arts and crafts and DIY projects, and enjoying the company of friends and family.

I became certified as a Child Life Specialist in March 2015 and completed my Master’s Degree in Child Life from Bank Street College in May 2015. My degree program combined child development, coping, empathic responding and limit setting, creative arts modalities, therapeutic play, child psychology, and a few other things that pertain directly to the hospital environment. I now work in a children’s hospital as a Child Life Specialist on an inpatient unit working with a variety of children of different ages dealing with a variety of medical and developmental challenges.

Though I am not a parent myself, I will be utilizing my education and experience working with children at Disney, at camp, and in the hospital to provide tips and strategies for to help with making your vacation as magical and meltdown free as possible. Please note that I understand that all of these strategies  and tips will not work best for every child. You are the only one who truly knows your child and family so feel free to pick and choose things you want to try and let us know things that work better for your child in our comments section!

Can you just plan my vacation for me? Or help me with specifics?

Actually…. YES! I am a travel specialist with Magical Vacation Planner  (an authorized Disney vacation planner). I can book your vacations for Walt Disney World, Disneyland, Aulani, Adventures by Disney, the Disney Cruise Line, Universal Studios Orlando, Beaches, Sandals and Royal Caribbean Cruise Line and help you plan every step of the way. My services are completely free of charge to you and I will work to find you the best deal possible for your needs and budget. If a promotion applicable to your vacation comes out after you book, I will work to rebook that vacation for you at the better price whenever possible.

I can help recommend resort accommodations, ticket packages, dining reservations, and fastpass+ recommendations as well as assist in itinerary planning for parties with guests of all ages, needs, and interests. The best part about using a travel specialist like me to plan your vacation is that I can take the time and stress out of the booking process. I will get up at the crack of dawn to book your dining reservations or rebook a trip with a promotion so you don’t have to!

  1. I think I love your blog. I can’t afford to visit Disney so I just live through people on the internet. Have you ever watched any SeeYaReelSoon videos on youtube? They are a husband and wife that vlog their Disney holidays. Its something you might like.
